A park after dark works as a different retail environment from the same site at midday. Visibility turns into a product feature, queues run longer, and the impulse buy shifts from a souvenir to something a child can hold up and carry through the crowd.
Glow pigment and light-up product
The two differ on unit cost, on how they perform across a long evening, and on the compliance each one brings with it.
Glow-in-the-dark is a pigment that charges under light and releases it slowly, adds very little to the unit cost, and carries no electrical compliance. Performance at the end of a long evening is less predictable, because a product that has sat in a dark queue for an hour has had nothing to charge from.
Light-up product carries a battery, which places it in a different regulatory category from anything printed or embroidered. It performs consistently and it sells well, and it brings safety standards, battery-compartment requirements, transport restrictions on the freight, and disposal questions that a zoo or a conservation-facing park will be asked about.
Decoration that reads at night
High-contrast artwork holds up in low ambient light, and fine detail closes up until the shapes inside it stop separating. Anything relying on a mid-tone to separate two shapes will collapse under coloured event lighting, which shifts the apparent value of every colour in the print.
We print glow alongside DTF, sublimation, embroidery and screen print, and all of those methods run inside the group. Glow usually sits on top of a conventional print, so the registration between the two passes has to hold across the run.
Recommendations for a night range
- Glow for apparel, headwear and soft goods, where it adds little to the unit cost and carries no electrical compliance
- Light-up for a small number of hero items, where the performance justifies the compliance and freight work
- Artwork approved under the event's own lighting, which a studio proof will not reproduce
- Battery compliance and disposal messaging assigned to a named owner early in the program
